What's the data powering the Microgreens Seeds Density & Weight calculator?

 

Over the years I've created the most complete Microgreens database of all varieties we've tried growing, and gathered data about seeds weight, seeds density used in various experiments seeking the best possible yield, at the lowest costs possible (ie. use less seeds) –

I've done all the hard work for you and summarised it in this tool. I've reviewed scientific research papers published since 2000 for Microgreens yields optimisation, reviewed the trials results from other producers such as Johnny's Selected SeedsTrueLeaf Market and others to compare and challenge my data.

A few more considerations about the Microgreens Seeds Density data in the calculator:

  • If you think I have something wrong in the data or if I'm missing a Microgreen variety in the calculator and you have some data, please do let me know so we can review the data together and correct as needed!

  • The calculator doesn't work for circular trays, only square and rectangular as they are the most common. If you must use a circular Microgreens tray, do estimate the closest size!

  • The calculator's maximum tray dimensions are there for a reason: it's designed for the recommended trays you are likely to use!

  • Microgreens Seed Density Calculations are based on the average seed weight measured for each species in previous experiments and I checked each against various seeds producers lists to make sure there are no big variations.

  • Not all cultivars of a particular crop are the same: for example not all Beets cultivars have the same count of seeds per lb/Kg – I couldn't create a list for each cultivar for each Microgreens so where differences are negligible, I've consolidated to a single crop such as “Beets” in the calculator.

  • Average seed weight may change from batch to batch for a given species however we assume that the variation is relatively small within the same species.

  • While reviewing my data, I have found some wild variances but also some similarities in density results: if in doubt, you can try a density of about 24-25 seeds per square inch of growing medium surface as a good estimate.

  • Sometimes I forgot to record properly so I do have some gaps in my data (which is why you may notice some Microgreens varieties missing in the tool above!)

  • Data checks: I've done done the homework for you, with both my own experiments and measurements, and also cross checking with the research done by peers, including Francesco Di Gioia of PennState Extension, Johnny's Seeds density trials, CropKing, HomeMicrogreens, Todd of My View From the Woods, Brian of MicrogreensEntrepreneurs.
